Iron deficiency after partial gastrectomy.

چکیده

Iron-deficiency anaemia will develop in half the males and nearly all females after partial gastrectomy, and in addition to causing the anaemia the sideropenia may cause any general symptoms such as lassitude, failure to maintain weight, or dumping symptoms. The variable response to treatment is due to the fact that ferrous iron is not adequately released from coated tablets taken after meals and rapidly emptied from the gastric remnant. Treatment with chelated iron is more reliable, and one tablet taken on lying down each night is adequate in the treatment of mild anaemia and for its prevention in women during the reproductive life.

No Malabsorption of Inorganic Ferrous Iron in Patients with Achylia gastrica Celada et al. [1] recently described in this journal a considerable malabsorption of 59pe2+ for subjects with achylia gastrica. The authors have used the same test dose of 0.56 mg 59Fe2+ and the technique of whole body counting of absorbed 5βFe as proposed by us [7] but their results are in contradiction with published...

Experiences with dual protein bound aqueous vitamin B12 absorption test in subjects with low serum vitamin B12 concentrations.

A dual isotope vitamin B12 absorption test in which vitamin B12 is given both in aqueous solution and bound to protein (chicken serum), was evaluated in 26 controls and 68 patients with subnormal serum vitamin B12 concentrations (19 with pernicious anaemia, 13 with iron deficiency, seven after partial gastrectomy, seven with malabsorptive states, five with folate deficiency, four with chronic a...

A long term study of the iron status of patients following vagotomy.

The occurence of anemia following partial gastrectomy is well recognised: the reported incidence ranges from three to 63 per cent'. Iron deficiency is the commonest cause of the anaemia, deficiencies of either B12 or folic acid accounting for only a small number1. With the advent of vagotomy and drainage as the routine treatment for duodenal ulcer it was hoped that anaemia would no longer be a ...

Blood loss after partial gastrectomy.

Six male and three female patients previously iron deficient after a partial gastrectomy were investigated using a whole body counter to measure their percentage (59)Fe retention. No significant difference in iron loss between postgastrectomy patients and controls was found in the majority of subjects over a study which lasted from 175 to 225 days. The detection of increased free iron loss requ...

(Last week Mr. Williams considered the cause and management of some symptoms arising after partial gastrectomy. The article continues with an account of other common complaints.) Some degree of malabsorption of food is comm...
